The 1st Interdisciplinary Symposium on Sustainable Development, held in Namur, Belgium, aimed to address the systemic crises facing humanity by encouraging innovative scientific perspective, promoting an interdisciplinary approach, and enhancing the recognition of scientists working on sustainable development. Using Skype technology from Washington, D.C. Mr. Rifkin gave a keynote speech, outlining the Third Industrial Revolution, and how it frames a future vision of sustainable development.

Investments in renewable energy, a full-scale shift to a Third Industrial Revolution, and a focus on harvesting the unique physical and cultural characteristics of China were the key points of the presentation.
